This book is great. I picked it up when my grandmother was diagnosed with lung cancer, and it helped to calm her down. instead of sitting around worrying until the doctor came, she'd rifle through the book looking for answers. It's written in a simple style but the information covers a lot of ground. I'd heartily recommend this book for anyone spending time in the hospital.
This book does a great job of breaking down complex procedures and concepts into accessible and practical language. Many people (as I was) are intimidated by hospital visits or stays - because they tend to be a scary and confusing experience - but this book makes hospitals less frightening and more understandable by putting essential knowledge in the hands of both patients and family members. I highly recommend this book.
Finally, someone has written a cleanly organized, easy to utilize book to help us navigate through the craziness of doctors, hospitals, insurance, etc. I picked this book up prior to a surgery, and I was SO much more prepared to ask the right questions and maximize my experience and treatment. Since then, I've had the occasion to use the book two other times. It's just one of those references that you'll find yourself turning to again and again. The authors did an amazing job organizing this book in a way that empowers you to grab the exact information you need at the exact time you need it, without a lot of searching. These guys clearly understand the "system", and I'm extremely thankful that they've decided to share it with the rest of us. You'll thank yourself for having this book in your house...because you will need it, eventually.
I can't say enough great things about this book. Beyond probably saving me a lot of money dealing with the insurance companies, my last two hospital experiences (two surgeries) were incredibly smooth thanks to Mr. Garner and Dr. Gionis. I walked into both experiences armed with real, useful knowledge that ensured the best treatment and most efficient process possible. For once, I had the power...by knowing what to ask and how to handle each stage.
I'd recommend that everyone have a copy of this, ready for whenever they need it (and everyone will eventually need it). I also sent a copy to each of my loved ones, because I want them to be protected and strong when each of them deal with hospitals, doctors, insurance companies, etc.
Like I said in the beginning, I can't say enough about this book. I'm so grateful for it. Thank you!!
Unfortunately, I've spent a lot of time in hospitals in recent years due to illness and catastrophic injuries in my family. I wish I'd had this book then! Somehow, I managed to claw my way through confusing diagnoses, treatment instructions and hospital bills. But it wasn't easy and the frustration I felt was often overwhelming. When someone you love is ill, even ordinary tasks can seem unmanageable. The complexities of the healthcare system make an already difficult situation even more untenable. Hospital Stay is meant to ease that distress. In clear and concise terms, the book walks you through the entire hospital experience from admission through diagnosis through treatment and the final bill. Patients and their loved ones are empowered to navigate the complex healthcare system with confidence. It's a must-read for anyone in the unfortunate position of spending time in a hospital. At some point, that's all of us.
I felt compelled to write a review of this book because I've used it twice (due to two surgeries) recently, and both times, I felt so lucky and thankful to have it accessible. Basically, this amazing book is more of a guide or map on dealing with the quagmire of hospitals, doctors, insurance companies, and much more. If you've ever been in a medical situation where you weren't completely sure what to ask, or who to talk to, or how to protect yourself from getting less than you deserve from your medical provider or insurance company....you NEED to have a copy of this. I promise you'll end up using it & you will always thank yourself for being empowered against all of the confusion most people face. I got one copy for myself and a couple for my parents and in-laws. I want them to have the knowledge necessary to protect themselves too, and I never want them to be unsure of what to do when facing a surgery or hospital stay.

As a young, and fortunately, healthy individual I have not been put in the position of having to deal with hospitals, doctors, or medical tests; nothing beyond routine check-ups to this point (knock on wood). However, in that I am aware of my own mortality, and the statistical likelihood of having to interact with our medical system, I was more than excited to find this book with the hopes of being better prepared for what may come about in the future.
"Hospital Stay" does a great job of describing 'who' you'll be interacting with in the hospital, 'what' they will be doing to you, and 'why' these medical professionals are proceeding the way they are. Beyond that, the section off the book that talks about how to interact with and help loved ones cope with a hospital stay is very insightful and something that you probably won't find in many other places.
Being the CEO of a hospital, the author is uniquely positioned to give advice on the "Hospital Stay" and Garner does a good job of explaining in a way that any reader will understand.
I was certainly not disappointed with this book, and I think it is an excellent read for anyone who is either in or going into the hospital. If you are looking to better understand our healthcare system, you should definitely read this book.
